Android 17 introduces App Lock, providing more protection for sensitive applications on Pixel smartphones.
Google is apparently working on introducing a system-wide app lock in Android 17, a feature many users have long missed. According to a discovery in the Canary build from Android Authority, the company is developing an interface that will allow individual applications to be secured using biometric methods such as facial recognition or fingerprint scanning, as well as a traditional passcode.
Until now, Pixel owners have had to rely on external solutions, while manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo have offered this option for years. iOS also has a comparable feature. With Android 17, Google could integrate the lock directly into the launcher, thus eliminating the need for third-party apps.
Unlike the current "Private Space," which moves apps to a separate user profile and is therefore not very practical, the new approach would offer significantly easier handling.
The idea isn't entirely new. Google Photos already has a protected area for sensitive content. The planned app lock would extend this logic to the entire system. While the discovery in the Canary build suggests an advanced stage of development, it remains unclear whether the feature will actually be introduced with Android 17. A later release as part of an interim update or even with Android 18 is also possible.
The first developer preview is expected soon. After last year's delay in the release cycle, Android 17 DP1 could still be released in December 2025 or early 2026. However, whether it will include app locking is not guaranteed.
