Google is planning a milestone with Android 17 – here's what to expect.

With Android 17, Google is preparing an update that goes far beyond the usual improvements. Internally codenamed "Cinnamon Bun," the new version is slated for release in 2026 and is considered a milestone. In addition to classic optimizations, it will bring profound innovations for desktop use, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and innovative app concepts. Although Android 16 QPR2 was only recently released, there are increasing indications of an imminent first developer preview.

Google is planning a milestone with Android 17.

One focus is on desktop integration. Google is planning a fully-fledged mode that incorporates ChromeOS elements and makes Android apps directly usable on PCs and laptops. With a hybrid system called Aluminium OS, the company primarily aims to reach users seeking an alternative after Windows 10 support ends. Microsoft's current period of weakness could allow Google to establish Android as a desktop platform.

Android 17 also sets new standards in augmented reality. With Android XR, apps are designed to run seamlessly on VR and AR headsets. More manufacturers plan to introduce corresponding hardware in 2026. Google is working closely with Samsung and other partners on a unified platform that, like smartphones, aims to build a broad user base.

Android 17 – some features are already partially functional in the initial test

Another feature is the so-called Min Mode. This displays important information directly on the always-on display without requiring the device to be unlocked. Navigation instructions, weather data, and notifications appear compact and energy-efficient. Initial tests are already underway with Pixel 10 users. In parallel, Google is experimenting with floating app bubbles that simplify multitasking. Users can switch between applications without the traditional app switch and use multiple programs simultaneously in thumbnail view.

Local AI models are intended to strengthen data privacy in Android 17.

The integration of artificial intelligence plays a central role. Android 17 relies on local models that operate independently of the cloud. This increases speed and strengthens data privacy. Planned features include automatic optimizations for battery and performance, context-aware suggestions, and voice assistants with offline functionality. With this, Google aims to get ahead of its competitors, Apple and Huawei, who are also working on AI-based operating systems.

Android 17 rollout expected in the third quarter

The schedule calls for an early developer preview shortly after the release of Android 16 QPR2. This will be followed by several beta versions before the stable release is expected in the third quarter of 2026. All Pixel devices with a Tensor chip will be supported, including the sixth generation, for which this will be the last major update. Select models from Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi are also expected to be included.
