Surprise for millions of Android users: Samsung makes an update decision

Samsung is releasing another update for the Galaxy S21. The November update includes important security fixes. Find out why and what users should be aware of.

The Galaxy S21 series models were initially supposed to receive security updates only quarterly. However, Samsung has already released three updates in the past three months. 

The November 2025 patch, which is around 300 MB in size and carries firmware version G99xBXXSIHYK1, doesn't bring any new features, but it does include crucial improvements to the fingerprint sensor and the USB interface. This demonstrates that the manufacturer still pays special attention to even devices that are almost five years old.

Samsung surprises with update frequency

The update history of the past few months illustrates the unusual frequency. A patch with unspecified security fixes was released at the end of August, followed by an update to close critical vulnerabilities at the end of October. Finally, on November 25th, the current version was released with targeted fixes for biometric authentication and USB connections.

The increase in reports is due to the widespread popularity of the S21 series. Furthermore, Samsung apparently wanted to close vulnerabilities before they could be exploited quickly. The upcoming end of support in 2026 likely also plays a role, as the manufacturer is using the last few months to ensure maximum security.

The November security patch focuses on two key areas. The fingerprint sensor received stronger encryption and improved authentication to prevent manipulation with fake fingerprints. The USB interface was also secured, making data transfers at public chargers less vulnerable to attack. Additionally, Samsung promises improved system stability and general security enhancements, but the details were not released.

The update is available in Europe for the Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra models. The Fan Edition follows a separate update cycle and received the patch earlier. Users can access and install the update via Settings > Software update. A Wi-Fi network is recommended for the download, and the battery should be at least half charged to avoid problems during installation.
