iPhone 17: Screen protectors become a problem
The iPhone 17 display has improved anti-glare properties, but traditional screen protectors can negate this advantage.
Apple is using its new Ceramic Shield 2 display material for the entire iPhone 17 lineup. Its glass surface is said to be three times more scratch-resistant and, at the same time, reduces reflections thanks to a new coating. This makes the screen appear more transparent in everyday use.
Less glare – except with a screen protector
And that's actually the case: measurements show that the iPhone 17 reflects almost twice as little as the iPhone 16 Pro without a screen protector. However, if a screen protector is applied, the reflection suddenly rises above the level of its predecessor.
The reason lies in the way the new coating works. The anti-reflective layer is applied directly to the glass and requires direct contact with air. The adhesive used for protective films almost completely negates this effect.
Memorable films as a possible solution
As an alternative, experts recommend screen protectors with their own anti-reflective coating. These can at least partially preserve the benefits. Anyone wanting to take full advantage of Ceramic Shield 2 should therefore avoid using standard, basic screen protectors.
