Samsung unveils a double foldable smartphone and surprises everyone.

With the TriFold, Samsung demonstrates what's possible with foldable displays today. Whether the hybrid device will be a success is a different question entirely.

The most important points in brief

  • Samsung is launching a double-folding smartphone.
  • When unfolded, the TriFold becomes a 10-inch tablet.
  • It will be released first in South Korea in December; Europe will have to wait.

TriFold? That's what it looks like

Samsung has unveiled the Z TriFold, its highly anticipated foldable smartphone with not one, but two hinges. It consists of three panels, each approximately 4 mm thin, which unfold to form a tablet.

When folded, the TriFold has a 6.5-inch display, allowing it to be used like a conventional smartphone. Unfolding the bi-folding device transforms it into an ultra-thin, 10-inch tablet.

The hybrid device weighs 309 grams and is 12.9 mm thick when folded. For comparison, the simply foldable Galaxy Z Fold 7 is significantly thinner and lighter at 8.9 mm, but its unfolded screen is only 8 inches, making its diagonal 5 cm smaller. The TriFold, on the other hand, with a diagonal of just over 25 cm, qualifies as a genuine tablet.

Samsung has expanded Android's multitasking capabilities for the TriFold. On the one hand, up to three apps can be displayed on the tablet at any size. On the other hand, a desktop interface can be used as an alternative. This is said to support up to four workspaces, each with five apps running simultaneously.

Technically, the TriFold is otherwise similar to Samsung's current foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which largely impressed us in our test. The display technology and camera are essentially the same as the Fold 7; the battery is larger, and the charging speed has been increased accordingly. The "Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy" processor is already familiar from the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

South Korea first, and Europe has to wait.

The Galaxy Z TriFold will be available in South Korea starting December 12, 2025. It is expected to launch in China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the US in the first quarter of 2026. Europe and other regions will have to wait.

In South Korea, the TriFold will be priced at 3,590,400 won, roughly equivalent to 2,000 Swiss francs. In reality, if it is released, it will likely cost between 2,500 and 3,000 Swiss francs.

Samsung is the second major manufacturer to present a double-folding smartphone. The Chinese manufacturer Huawei unveiled its Mate XT back in September 2024.

Apple, meanwhile, is working on its first single-folding iPhone. It is expected to be released in 2026 and is likely to cost well over 2,000 Swiss francs.
