Surprise in the ranking: Samsung loses first place – this phone leads the way

New figures reveal which smartphones sold best in the third quarter of 2025. One manufacturer clearly dominates the top 10.

Surprise in the ranking: Samsung loses first place – this phone leads the way

According to data from Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 16 was the best-selling smartphone worldwide in the third quarter of 2025. With a 4% market share, the model topped the sales charts for the third consecutive quarter. Festive promotions in India, in particular, boosted sales, while the Japanese market continued its recovery.

Despite the launch of the iPhone 17 series, the iPhone 16 was able to limit the usual seasonal declines. However, the Pro models of the iPhone 16 experienced steeper losses as consumers in key markets such as the US, UK, and China increasingly opted for the new iPhone 17 series.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max makes it into the top 10.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max, equipped with several camera upgrades and the new A19 Pro chip, landed in tenth place in the global sales charts for the quarter. The model was the best-selling smartphone in September 2025, although its availability was limited towards the end of the quarter.

Samsung dominates with the Galaxy A series.

Samsung also secured five spots in the top 10, relying heavily on its Galaxy A series. The Galaxy A16 5G became the best-selling Android smartphone of the quarter, surpassing its predecessor from the previous year and the 4G variant of the same series. Samsung's mid-range offerings,  the Galaxy A36 and A56, also saw increased sales.

Advanced features like "Best Face" and "Nightography," initially reserved for flagship models, are now making mid-range phones more attractive as well. Improved charging speed and extended software support also contribute to their success.

In emerging markets such as Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, LTE models continue to play a significant role. The Galaxy A16 4G and Galaxy A06, the only non-5G smartphones on the list, generate over half of their sales volume in these regions.

Trends in the mid-price segment

The mid-range segment continues to gain strength each quarter, driven by the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (GenAI). Devices like the Galaxy A series offer features previously reserved for flagship phones, bridging the gap between price points. These developments are making the segment more competitive and offering consumers more performance at an affordable price.
