Apple is using innovative materials for its first foldable iPhone.

According to Korean supply chain sources, Apple will use Liquid Metal for the hinge of the foldable iPhone – an amorphous material the company has been researching for over 15 years.

Apple secured exclusive rights to liquid metal technology back in 2010 but has so far used it only for small parts, such as the SIM card ejection clip.

The perfect material

The crystal-free material offers high strength, resists permanent deformation, and withstands repeated mechanical stress – ideal properties for a folding hinge.

Optimized titanium for the case

The casing is said to be made of an improved titanium alloy that offers greater strength at a lower weight than previous iPhone frames, with almost the same surface area.

Since folding devices are larger and hinge weight is critical, this optimization could be crucial.

Market launch in autumn 2026

The first foldable iPhone is expected to be unveiled in the fall, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

A 7.8-inch internal display without a visible crease, a 5.5-inch external display, the A20 chip, and Touch ID are expected to be included.
