Elon Musk is planning an AI- generated film adaptation of the Odyssey. It is scheduled for release in 2026 and is intended to be historically accurate.

Elon Musk plans to produce his own film adaptation of Homer's Odyssey using his AI system Grok Imagine, according to the American industry website Variety. The entrepreneur reportedly announced on his X platform that a fully AI-generated feature film is planned for release before the end of 2026. Musk stated that the work will be "historically accurate and faithful to the art of Homer. "

Musk released his announcement along with a roughly three-minute AI short film created by an X user using Grok Imagine. He did not provide any further information regarding the film's scope, production method, or potential release date.

Musk's statement is already sparking debate. Homer's Odyssey, written around 2,800 years ago, is considered a mythological epic featuring figures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the sorceress Circe. The extent to which a film adaptation of this story can be "historically accurate" therefore remains an open question. For Musk, historical accuracy likely refers to the ethnicity of the actors.

The xAI founder had repeatedly criticized Christopher Nolan's film adaptation even before its theatrical release. Among other things, he attacked casting decisions. Musk commented on the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy several times on X. He also shared posts targeting actor Elliot Page, who plays Sinon in Nolan's film.

Musk posted a three-minute clip on X, but the whole thing doesn't look particularly impressive.

Regardless of the debate, The Odyssey is proving to be a box office success for Universal Pictures. The film grossed approximately $264 million worldwide in its opening weekend, achieving the most successful opening weekend to date in director Christopher Nolan's career.
