SnowPhone: How to keep your iPhone fit in winter
Avoid cold shock: Your devices need special care.
The tech experts at Heise show you how to safely protect your iPhone and other Apple devices from frost and snow. While modern smartphones are more robust than before, extreme cold remains a challenge.
Display and touchscreen: OLED is your friend
On iPhone, OLED displays perform better in sub-zero temperatures than older LCD panels. However, touch sensitivity may decrease in extreme frost. To address this, consider the following tips.
Activate glove mode in the settings or use gloves with conductive fingertips – this way, you don't have to expose your hands to the cold.
Battery protection: Heat is key
The battery is most vulnerable at temperatures below 0°C; its capacity drops. Keep your iPhone in an inside pocket rather than outside or in a backpack.
Do not leave your iPhone in a cold car. If the device turns off due to cold, allow it to warm up slowly before charging.
Condensation: The invisible danger
Despite an IP68 rating, iPhones are susceptible to condensation during rapid temperature changes. After coming in from the cold, do not place your iPhone on a radiator.
Instead, let it warm up gently. In snowy or wet conditions, a protective cover will help; in an emergency, a simple plastic bag will do.
In an emergency: Be patient
If your device becomes wet, switch it off and remove the SIM card tray. Do not use a hairdryer or blow on the device.
Gently tap out moisture. Let everything dry for at least half a day before turning your iPhone back on.
