BYD Blade 2.0: Megawatt charging outclasses all competitors
On March 5, 2026, in Shenzhen, BYD shattered the physical rules of electric mobility. The Chinese company unveiled the Blade Battery 2.0, an LFP cell capable of handling 1 megawatt of charging power. Specifically, this means the battery charges from 10 to 97 percent in nine minutes.
Even at minus 30 degrees Celsius, the system completes this charge in just 12 minutes. With this innovation, BYD definitively overcomes the thermal limitations of large batteries, leaving its Western competitors technologically outdated.
The first vehicle with this technology is the Yangwang U7. This luxury sedan combines a 150 kWh battery with a 10C charging rate. In practice, this means you can add enough range for 400 kilometers in just five minutes. By comparison, a Tesla Model S or Porsche Taycan Turbo seems like technology from the last decade, given these figures. BYD directly compares the U7 to the BMW i7 and the Mercedes EQS in its promotional materials. In terms of performance (1,306 hp) and range (820 km according to WLTP), the Chinese car leaves them far behind.
To complement its battery, BYD is rolling out a new charging infrastructure. The “Flash Chargers” deliver up to 1,500 kW per charging point. The innovative overhead design with suspended cables prevents ground-level plugs from being damaged or run over. By the end of 2026, 20,000 of these stations are planned to be in operation worldwide. BYD also intends to expand this network massively outside of China. Users can even request locations via an app if a megawatt charger is not yet available in their vicinity.
The Yangwang U7 impresses even away from the charging station. Four electric motors, each spinning at 30,000 revolutions per minute, catapult the car to 100 km/h in two seconds. Its top speed is over 300 km/h. Despite this hypercar performance, BYD promises enormous efficiency. With the Blade 2.0, the company proves that innovation leadership in the battery sector is firmly in Chinese hands. Anyone still complaining about charging times has simply missed this breakthrough.
