Google Play Store: New warning exposes apps with high battery consumption

Google is now flagging apps in the Play Store that consume excessive battery power. Since March 1, 2026, affected apps have displayed a clear warning directly on their product pages. 

This message informs users that an app may be using more power than expected due to high background activity. The underlying technical issue is partial wake locks. These features keep the system active even when the device is in sleep mode. While music apps and navigation services use this technique legitimately, many other developers misuse it.

The new metric was developed in close cooperation with Samsung. Both companies combined real-world battery life data with Android’s platform analyses. The results are directly incorporated into the Core Vitals for developers. Those who exceed the thresholds for these wake-lock functions not only risk a warning message, but Google also threatens to remove such apps from the official Play Store recommendation lists. This pressure on programmers is already having an effect. According to Google, some developers have already reduced their wake-lock rates by over 90 percent.

Instead of relying on continuous background processes, Google recommends using WorkManager. This service handles tasks more efficiently and periodically. A case study with the fitness provider Whoop demonstrates that a clean configuration drastically reduces battery drain. For users, this change primarily means greater transparency before installation. It allows users to see whether an app is immediately unnecessarily stressing the battery. The rollout of the warning messages will take place gradually over the coming weeks for all affected titles in the store.

Google is sending a clear signal in favor of a better user experience. Developers will now have to optimize their software to avoid this unsightly labeling. The goal is to extend the battery life of all Android smartphones without requiring the owner to intervene. Anyone browsing the Play Store in the future should pay attention to the new text.
