These Google Pixel phones can make an emergency call via satellite.
No network, no problem: Many Pixel smartphones can alert emergency services via satellite, including Google’s new entry-level model, the Pixel 10a. Here’s what you need to know about making an emergency call – and how it works with iPhones.
With the new Pixel 10a, Google is introducing satellite emergency calling for the first time on its entry-level smartphone. This feature allows emergency services to be alerted even when there is no mobile network or Wi-Fi connection, whether in a dead zone or actually out in the wilderness.
The smartphone automatically offers the option “Emergency call via satellite” when you dial the country’s emergency number, even if no mobile or Wi-Fi connection is available.
Works in large parts of Europe and North America.
Emergency satellite calls work in large parts of Europe and North America; an up-to-date coverage table by country can be found on Google’s support pages. Currently, emergency satellite calls work in these countries:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA
Google explains exactly how the emergency call works in a blog post. It’s important to follow the instructions on the display precisely to position the smartphone correctly for the satellite connection. Obstacles such as trees, terrain, or buildings can also block the signal. “In this case, you’ll need to move to a new location where you have a clear view of the sky,” Google writes.
These Pixel models can call for help across space.
The predecessor to the new Pixel 10a, the mid-range Pixel 9a, did not yet have the satellite SOS function because it used an older modem. Until now, this SOS feature was therefore reserved for Google’s high-end smartphones from the 9th generation Pixel series onwards, i.e., the following models:
- Pixel 9/10
- Pixel 9/10 Pro
- Pixel 9/10 Pro XL
- Pixel 9/10 Pro Fold
Google’s entry-level A-series models will also receive satellite emergency calling in the future. As mentioned, the Pixel 10a will be the first to get it.
And what about smartwatches and iPhones?
In addition, a smartwatch is included: The Pixel Watch 4 (LTE) is also ready for “emergency calls via satellite”.
Apple also offers a satellite emergency call feature – it is available on all iPhones from model 14 onwards, provided iOS 16.1 or higher is installed.
