Xiaomi launches mini washer-dryer for under €200 in China.

Xiaomi is expanding its household appliance range and launching a compact washer-dryer. The appliance is especially designed for single-person households and very small apartments with limited space.

This is exactly what you would imagine a smart washing machine from Xiaomi to be like.

If you didn't know what you were looking at, you might mistake this device for an air fryer, rice cooker, or toaster at first glance. The simple, white design, typical of Xiaomi, gives no initial indication of its function. However, opening the two compartments on the top reveals two small washing drums inside. A black strip with touch-sensitive elements in front of it allows for operation and serves as the display.

Features include various wash programs and a drying function. The wash cycles are very short, lasting up to 45 minutes, and are run at a maximum temperature of 40°C.

Each compartment has a maximum capacity of 0.5 kg. For example, this could hold 14 pairs of socks or, depending on the size, 7 to 15 pairs of underwear. No, you won't be washing jeans here. The drying capacity is even lower, at just 0.2 kg. Consider simply hanging your socks up to dry instead.

As a smart home device, the mini washer-dryer is, of course, compatible with Xiaomi's Mi Home app and can be integrated and monitored there like all other household appliances.

Washing machine for a very small target group

Of course, this is aimed at a very specific target group. Families who frequently wash mountains of laundry won't find it useful. However, if you often need to wash small loads or items of clothing, you don't have to wait until you have enough to fill a large machine. This might be the case, for example, if you frequently need to change underwear or have baby clothes that get dirty faster than you can keep up with washing them.

Even then, Xiaomi already offers a very similar model, albeit not a top-loading one like this one, but a front-loading model. This countertop washing machine, launched two years ago, has a 1 kg drum and thus the same capacity, but it's not divided into two compartments and lacks a drying function. Even if you generally have a use for such a device, Xiaomi itself offers a better alternative.
