Meta presents AI glasses with a screen and a "Neural" wristband. Mark Zuckerberg sees smart glasses as a way to achieve "personal superintelligence." At Meta headquarters, he recently unveiled AI glasses with an integrated display.

To control the glasses, the company has developed a so-called EMG wristband, the "Meta Neural Band." It measures muscle activity in the wrist and is designed to interpret even subtle movements as control signals. This should enable users to respond to text messages and take calls using subtle hand gestures. During the presentation, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated how he wrote letters on a surface with his fingers, which were then converted into words for a text message using the wristband. Despite some hiccups during the demonstration, the audience applauded at the end of the presentation.

Prices starting at $799

The glasses worn by Zuckerberg at the Meta Connect conference in Menlo Park, California, are somewhat bulkier than conventional models and stand out due to their thick temples. Meta claims a battery life of up to six hours per charge. The display, built into the right lens, has a resolution of 600 x 600 pixels. The device will be available in the US at the end of September, with a starting price of $799. The devices are also scheduled to be launched in Canada, France, Italy, and the UK in early 2026. The wristband is included in the price.

In parallel with the Meta Ray-Ban display, the company also unveiled new versions of its existing smart glasses, which are being developed in collaboration with eyewear group EssilorLuxottica. This includes a model called Vanguard from the Oakley brand, aimed at athletes and priced at $499. The device connects to fitness platforms like Garmin and Strava to provide real-time training stats and post-workout summaries. It offers a nine-hour battery life and is scheduled to be available starting October 21.

Additionally, the existing Ray-Ban line has been updated. While it lacks an integrated display, it now offers almost twice the battery life of its predecessor and features an improved camera. Prices for these models start at €419, making them significantly more expensive than their predecessors, which started at €329.

"Personal Superintelligence"

The presentation of the smart glasses is the company's latest attempt to catch up in the AI race. Meta has for years considered glasses with cameras, microphones, speakers, and now displays the best way to interact with artificial intelligence in everyday life. This allows the software to see what users see and thus gain context to be useful.

While the social media giant, which includes Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is a pioneer in the development of smart glasses, it lags behind competitors such as OpenAI and Alphabet's Google in introducing advanced AI models.
