New Features in iPhone 17 Have Been on Android Phones Since 2017
Apple launched its latest phone, the iPhone 17 series, at the Apple Event "Awe Dropping" held on Tuesday (9/9/2025). The iPhone 17 series comprises four models: the regular iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 is positioned as the most basic model compared to the others.
Nevertheless, Apple now includes support for a screen refresh rate of up to 120 Hz for the iPhone 17. This support marks a significant improvement for the base variant of the iPhone, as it had previously only been equipped with a 60 Hz screen refresh rate.
This improvement also makes the iPhone 17 nearly equivalent to the duo of iPhone 17 Pro. This is because the Pro models have supported such a high screen refresh rate since the iPhone 13 Pro debuted in 2021. However, for Android phones, this support has been available for a long time.
Phones with a 120 Hz refresh rate have been around since 2017, specifically since the Razer Phone was released in 2017. The same support has also been adopted by other Android phone brands, such as Samsung, OnePlus, and Google, since 2019. As a result, a 120 Hz refresh rate has now become one of the specifications commonly found in many Android phones, including entry-level models.
For example, the Oppo A6i, which was just released in China. This entry-level phone is also equipped with a 120 Hz refresh rate support. Meanwhile, Apple took years to bring this feature to its base model iPhones.
Despite this, the iPhone 17 is also equipped with dynamic refresh rate support. On paper, the refresh rate of the iPhone 17 can be reduced to as low as 1 Hz. For instance, this supports displays like always-on displays, which usually show information such as time, date, and so on.
This support complements other specifications of the iPhone 17 screen. This smartphone features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion support and a maximum brightness level of up to 3,000 nits. Its bezels are claimed to be thinner than those of the previous generation. This phone is also coated with Ceramic Shield 2 and features 7 layers of anti-reflective protection.
Specifications of the iPhone 17
The iPhone 17 is the only model that still adopts the 'original' design of the iPhone, similar to previous generations. The camera module is still "standard", shaped like a vertical pill that houses two camera sensors. Unlike the iPhone 17 Air, which has a horizontal "plato" camera module on the back.
The main camera is a 48 MP "dual fusion" camera, which also includes a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom (26 mm and 52 mm focal lengths, f/1.6 aperture, and sensor-shift OIS). The second sensor features a 48 MP ultra-wide lens and a 12 MP 1x macro lens (13 mm and 26 mm focal lengths, with an aperture of f/2.2 and Hybrid Focus Pixels). Apple claims that its ultra-wide camera can produce images with a resolution 4 times sharper than the iPhone 16.
Meanwhile, its selfie camera features an 18 MP resolution with similar capabilities to the iPhone 17 Air, including the Camera Stage Front feature. For hardware, the iPhone 17 is the only model in the iPhone 17 series powered by the A19 chip (3nm). This chip features a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, which is faster than those found in previous iPhones.
For the battery, Apple claims that in 10 minutes of charging, the iPhone 17 can play more than 8 hours of video playback. The iPhone 17 also runs iOS 26 out of the box. This phone comes in Lavender, Mist Blue, Black, and Sage colors.
