Samsung Releases Galaxy XR, an AI Headset to Compete with Apple Vision Pro

Samsung officially released the Galaxy XR, the first Android XR-based Extended Reality (XR) headset that delivers a complete immersive experience with Google Gemini AI support.

Samsung Releases Galaxy XR, an AI Headset to Compete with Apple Vision Pro

The Galaxy XR allows users to run Android apps, watch Netflix 4K, and even work in 3D environments, making it a major competitor to the Apple Vision Pro

Equipped with a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, a 4K Micro-OLED display, and a lightweight 545 grams, the Galaxy XR starts at US$1,799.99 (Rp. 29.9 million) with a bonus AI subscription and exclusive content.

Samsung officially launched the Galaxy XR, its first mixed reality (Extended Reality) headset, in the United States today, Wednesday (October 22, 2025).

The Galaxy XR brings all the capabilities of an Android phone (features and apps), enhanced with immersive touch. Samsung also integrates Google's Gemini AI to support all user interactions.

With this, the Samsung Galaxy XR becomes a direct challenger to the Apple Vision Pro, which was previously present in the premium mixed reality device market.

"With the Galaxy XR, Samsung is introducing a completely new mobile device ecosystem," said Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics

"Built on Android XR, the Galaxy XR expands the vision of mobile AI into new realms of immersive and meaningful possibilities, enabling XR to transform from concept to everyday reality for both the industry and users," he continued.

Previously, the Galaxy XR was known as Project Moohan and was showcased at the Galaxy S25 launch event in San Jose, USA, in January 2025

In terms of design, the Galaxy XR appears to have the same design as the prototype shown earlier this year, with a shape similar to the Apple Vision Pro, which was inspired by the discontinued Meta Quest Pro VR headset

The design is ergonomic, featuring a removable light shield, six microphones, ten motion sensors, and iris recognition for security.

Android experience in an immersive world

The Galaxy XR brings all the capabilities of an Android phone to a headset, complete with familiar app support and features. This is thanks to the device's Android XR operating system, developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm

Samsung ensures that the majority of Android applications can be run directly on this device, including the Netflix movie streaming application.

In the launch keynote, Samsung announced that the Galaxy XR is the only headset to support Netflix. This allows users to instantly watch their favorite movies or series on Netflix in 4K, like a private cinema.

Users can explore iconic locations and dream cities with Google Maps XR. This allows users to experience the world of their choice and experience the world around them.

AI Gemini becomes the main friend.

The immersive experience is enriched by Google Gemini, a multimodal AI that understands context through voice, hand movements, and sight.

Similar to the experience on Samsung Galaxy phones, the Gemini assistant can be summoned at any time from any application window. Users can choose Gemini mode (with voice input) or Gemini Live (with voice and video input).

For example, Gemini can be summoned and asked to act as a virtual tour guide. Gemini will then offer suggestions for nearby restaurants and landmarks while displaying realistic 3D maps.

When watching a video on YouTube XR, for example, users can simply ask, "Is this location really in Paris?" and Gemini will display additional explanations on-screen. While playing a game, Gemini can provide strategic input, tips, or simply answer questions about the game's characters.

All this can be done in real-time without pausing the ongoing activity in the application window.

Beyond entertainment, the Galaxy XR is also useful for productivity. Users can create, edit, and publish content in a 3D workspace, complete with integration with Google Workspace and Adobe Creative Cloud.

Multitasking capabilities are also available, allowing users to open multiple application windows. This allows users to watch three sports matches simultaneously on one screen, or open a browser, YouTube, and an editing application, for example.

In a demo shown off at the launch, users could command Gemini to organize application windows scattered across the screen, making them neater.

The Galaxy XR's immersive content is displayed on a 4K Micro-OLED display. This display delivers sharp image quality with a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz and a 96 percent DCI-P3 color gamut.

The field of view is quite wide, namely 109 degrees horizontally and 100 degrees vertically, making the display feel realistic like the real world.

Samsung's first XR headset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, which has six CPU cores (maximum clock speed of 2.4 GHz), an Adreno GPU, and an ISP (image signal processing) that can accommodate 12 cameras at once.

This device has 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It supports Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 7.

The Galaxy XR can be used for up to 2.5 hours (on a single charge) for video or gaming use, and can be fast charged via USB-C.

The headset is designed to be lightweight, weighing just 545 grams (plus forehead pad), with a 302 gram external battery to keep it from weighing down on the head. Samsung Galaxy XR Price
