WhatsApp develops new security feature: Strict account settings offer better protection against cyberattacks.

WhatsApp is working on a new security feature that will give users greater control over their privacy. With the Android update to version 2.25.33.4, distributed via the beta program in the Play Store, the messaging app is preparing a feature that enables "strict account security settings ." The option is not yet officially available for testing, but initial details indicate that WhatsApp intends to enhance user security significantly.

WhatsApp develops new security feature: Strict account settings offer better protection against cyberattacks.

The new concept focuses on a security mode that combines several existing protection features and automatically activates them when users enable it. This solution is primarily intended to help people who perceive an increased risk of targeted cyberattacks. When activated, the system locks several settings to particularly restrictive values—for example, the visibility of personal data, group invitations, or media reception from unknown contacts. The goal is a uniform, consistently secure configuration without manual adjustments.

A key component of the new security option is the blocking of media or attachments from unknown sources. This prevents images, documents, or voice messages from unknown contacts from being automatically downloaded. This reduces the risk of being attacked via malware or fake files. Additionally, when security mode is active, WhatsApp turns off automatic link previews to prevent websites from collecting users' IP addresses and inferring their location.

The mode also integrates existing security features: calls from unknown numbers are automatically muted, so potential spam or fraud attempts are no longer a direct nuisance. Additionally, a group rule ensures that users can only be added to group chats by saved contacts. Those not in the address book can only send an invitation rather than join directly.

Another integrated feature concerns security notifications for changes to encryption codes. Users are immediately informed if a contact's security code changes—for example, after switching devices or reinstalling the app. This allows for quick verification of suspicious changes. This is complemented by two-step verification, which adds an extra layer of protection to the WhatsApp account via a PIN code.

Privacy settings are also automatically tightened: All personal information, such as profile picture, status, "Last seen," or "About," is set to "Contacts only". Furthermore, WhatsApp routes calls through its own servers to anonymise IP addresses and prevent connection tracking.

The new security mode thus serves as a consolidated layer of defence. Individual settings are locked to prevent accidental deactivation of the protective measures. However, as soon as the user deactivates the mode, they regain complete control over all options.

The feature is currently under development and has not been enabled in any recent beta version. There is no exact release date yet. However, since it is already present in the latest beta version, its introduction during future testing is likely.

With this new security level, WhatsApp underscores its commitment to making protective mechanisms easily accessible not only to tech-savvy users but to everyone. Especially in times of increasing phishing attacks and targeted data espionage, the company is thus strengthening its position as one of the most secure messaging services on the market.
