BYD takes the lead, and Tesla is significantly behind this year
In 2025, the balance of power in the international electric vehicle industry will shift fundamentally. The Chinese manufacturer BYD has finally taken the lead, leaving the previous industry leader, Tesla, clearly behind. By the end of November, BYD had already sold around 2.07 million fully electric vehicles and is thus heading towards an annual result well above the two million mark.
Tesla cannot maintain this pace. The US company delivered 1.22 million vehicles in the first three quarters. One robust quarter, with almost half a million units, was primarily due to expiring tax breaks in the US. For the fourth quarter, analysts at Deutsche Bank expect sales of only 400,000 to 450,000 vehicles. This would mean Tesla would finish the year with approximately 1.65 million vehicles – a decrease of 7.7 percent compared to the previous year and a significant gap to BYD.
Several developments explain this shift. Tesla lost ground in Europe after Elon Musk's political involvement with Donald Trump drew criticism there. At the same time, reductions in government subsidies are impacting sales in the US. BYD, on the other hand, is pursuing a different strategy. The company is consistently expanding its international presence, exporting to more countries and establishing production facilities outside China. These measures strengthen the company's position amid rising trade conflicts.
The developments clearly show that Tesla no longer dominates the market unchallenged. BYD benefits from a broader global presence, more stable structures, and high production volumes. The competition for the future of electromobility thus has a new frontrunner, one that is solidifying its position with a long-term strategy.
