Spectacular turn of events: Samsung is apparently testing BOE OLED displays for future Galaxy S flagship phones.
New evidence from China suggests that Samsung will include this in future Galaxy S models. might use displays from a direct competitor for the first time in future Galaxy S models. According to several well-known leakers, the head of the mobile phone division met with the BOE board to discuss potential OLED deliveries for upcoming premium devices.
Until now, the display technology for the Galaxy S series has come exclusively from within Samsung. Samsung Display has been supplying the panels for the top smartphones, foldables, and some tablets for years.
However, rising costs for key components such as chips, camera modules, and memory are putting increasing pressure on the mobile communications division. To avoid price increases for customers, Samsung is apparently exploring alternatives – and a broader display supply chain would be a logical approach.
BOE has established itself as a reliable manufacturer in recent years and already produces OLED panels for certain entry-level iPhone models. These displays have received predominantly positive feedback. The timing is particularly noteworthy: Samsung Display recently won a patent dispute against BOE, which temporarily prevented the Chinese supplier from exporting to the US. Nevertheless, relations now appear to have eased.
Whether Samsung will actually use BOE panels for its flagship models remains to be seen. If so, it would represent a significant shift in its current procurement strategy. The industry is watching closely to see if this potential change of course is confirmed.
