Volkswagen is attempting a fresh start in China in 2026: the ID Unyx 08 with 800-volt technology and a futuristic SUV design.
Volkswagen is revamping its electric vehicle strategy in China in 2026, with the ID. Unyx 08, the company is launching an SUV that differs significantly from the familiar European ID models. Instead of the MEB platform, the vehicle utilizes a locally developed 800-volt architecture, the result of a partnership with a Chinese manufacturer.
The design of the ID. Unyx 08 deliberately opts for a radical departure. The front dispenses with the traditional VW logo and features a narrow LED strip. The side profile appears angular and dynamic, while the rear, with its diffuser-like appearance, is reminiscent of concept cars. Inside, a minimalist cockpit, large displays, and sustainable materials dominate.
With this, Volkswagen is aligning itself more closely with the preferences of Chinese buyers, who favor futuristic designs. This strategy aims to regain lost market share, as VW has recently lost ground in China to manufacturers such as BYD, NIO, and XPeng. Through local production, aggressive marketing, and rapid Development, the company intends to become competitive again.
Technically, the ID. Unyx 08 is on par with its competitors. The difference lies in its bold design, intended to appeal to younger buyers. European models remain more conservative and technologically behind until the SSP platform is introduced. Reasons for the delay include stricter approval regulations, a charging infrastructure that is not yet universally available, and differing market preferences. European customers currently tend to prefer more classic designs, while high-tech aesthetics are in demand in China.
