Mozilla is turning Firefox into an AI browser by using open source.
AI will soon power the Firefox browser features from Mistral. Mozilla is deliberately choosing an open-source product for this.
The Firefox browser is getting AI features, and Mozilla has chosen the French AI Mistral Small 4 for this purpose. These AI features will be part of the new Firefox Smart Window feature, which is currently in beta.
The Smart Window feature, integrated with Mistral, aims to make internet browsing more convenient. According to the manufacturer, it should make it easier to understand complex search histories. It should also make it easier to find valuable content you accidentally clicked away from. It should also display data sources more clearly. In general, the feature is designed to pick up where daily internet use left off.
"AI is increasingly becoming part of people's daily web experience. We want to ensure that this doesn't mean people are tied to the self-serving structures of a single company," said Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla Corporation.
Mozilla values openness
"Since the browser is at the heart of the web and the online experience, it should be a place where different AI providers can compete with each other and open source has a seat at the table ," adds Enzor-DeMeo. He sees this as more than just a product partnership.
"A browser should not be a one-sided funnel. It should preserve what has made the internet so powerful from the beginning: the freedom to explore, to discover different ideas and technologies, and to decide for oneself where the next step should lead ," he explained the Mistral decision.
Mistral (g+) is an AI developed in France that places great emphasis on the cultural characteristics of different cultural circles and is designed for multilingualism.
Until now, the Smart Window Beta feature in Firefox was only available in the US and Canada. France is now the first European country to activate the feature. Firefox is expected to offer Smart Window in Germany and the UK by the end of 2026
