Samsung Secures the Top Market Position in the First Half of 2026

The latest market data from Counterpoint Research for the first half of 2026 paints a clear picture of the global market leader: Samsung once again holds an undisputed position. With a worldwide market share of 22 percent, the South Korean company leads all competitors. Growth is remarkably robust, at 9 percent compared to the same period last year.

Overall, the Koreans' success is surprising. The global mobile communications sector is suffering from major supply chain problems and sharply rising component prices. Galaxy makers are nevertheless seeing rising sales figures thanks to a clever two-pronged sales strategy. Demand for the high-end models and the extremely popular Galaxy A series easily compensates for weaker sales in individual regions.

Industry analysts have observed a noticeable increase in global Android market share for months, primarily driven by Samsung's stable supply volumes. The company benefits from its vertical integration: because it manufactures key components such as memory chips and displays in-house, the smartphone division can withstand price fluctuations much better than pure assemblers.

Flagship boom meets margin pressure in the mid-range market.

The premium segment, in particular, is proving to be a strong growth driver. The share of expensive flagship devices in the overall market reached an all-time high of 29 percent in the first half of 2026. Together, Samsung and Apple hold an impressive 84 percent of this high-margin segment above $600. Bestsellers like the Galaxy S26 Ultra are gaining momentum, but the extremely expensive RAM chips are noticeably impacting manufacturers' balance sheets.

Internally, this cost pressure is already having an impact. Recent reports on upcoming pricing decisions for the Galaxy S26 series show that even the market leader must pass higher component costs on to buyers. In the price-sensitive mid-range segment, profit margins are shrinking drastically, as the more affordable A-series models can hardly be sold with the previously high returns.

Samsung is countering this pressure by increasing the use of its own Exynos SoCs in select regions. This move significantly reduces licensing fees to Qualcomm while also providing high capacity utilization for its in-house semiconductor division. For buyers, the chip choice remains a constant point of discussion, but financially, this plan is working for the Korean company for now.

In addition, the company is increasingly relying on trade-in programs and in-house financing models. Offers like Galaxy Forever make it easier for customers to upgrade to newer models regularly. This allows Samsung to build reliable customer loyalty, gradually drawing customers from the mid-range segment into the high-margin premium segment.

Emerging economies secure their leading global position.

Besides its expensive flagship models, global presence forms the second pillar of the company's success in the first half of the year. In Latin America, the group holds a 37 percent market share, while in the Middle East, the brand achieves 34 percent. Even in the fiercely competitive Southeast Asia, Samsung maintains its leading position with 21 percent.

This broad geographic base prevents a collapse if individual sales markets falter. Samsung and Apple's long-term dominance in key core markets shows that while Chinese challengers like Xiaomi or Vivo may gain ground in certain areas, they still maintain a significant global gap.

At the same time, growth in the mid-range market is increasingly shifting towards affordable 5G smartphones. With its Galaxy A series models, Samsung covers price ranges where competitors are already having to scale back due to rising material costs. This market presence secures the company enormous sales volumes, maintaining its lead over Apple.

The first half of 2026 thus provides clear proof of Samsung's resilience. The company is walking a tightrope between record sales and the threat of price increases. However, if the chip crisis persists in the coming months, maintaining market leadership in the second half of the year could become an extremely costly.
