Get Ready, ChromeOS and Android Will Merge Next Year.

After successfully introducing Gemini AI to the Android ecosystem, Google is now poised to take further steps. The Mountain View, California-based tech giant confirmed its ambitious plan to integrate ChromeOS with Android starting next year.

This means that Chromebook laptops that currently run on ChromeOS will have the same technological foundation as Android, complete with Gemini AI integration.

Rick Osterloh, Google's Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, explained this move at the recent Snapdragon Summit 2025.

Osterloh said that, so far, the system Google has built for PCs differs from the one It has developed for smartphones (Android).

"Now, we're bringing them together. Google is building the same technical foundation for our products on PC and desktop, bringing the Gemini model, the AI assistant, and the entire Android app and developer community to the PC ecosystem," Osterloh said.

Sameer Samat, head of Android at Google, echoed this sentiment. He said this is a new era where AI can work seamlessly across devices, both mobile and desktop.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon reportedly saw an early version of the combined ChromeOS-Android system and expressed his impression.

"I've seen it, and it's incredible. It truly embodies the vision of mobile and PC convergence. I can't wait to get my hands on it," said the Qualcomm boss.

ChromeOS missing?

This merger doesn't mean ChromeOS will disappear completely.

Google insists the Chromebook experience will remain, but the underlying platform will be based on Android. So, the ChromeOS interface with its signature simplicity will still be enjoyable, but underneath the hood, it shares the same foundation as Android.

This way, users can get a more consistent and integrated experience.

For example, AI apps and services previously only available on Android phones will now run seamlessly on Chromebooks. These include editing documents with Gemini, creating automated schedules, and smarter syncing between phone and laptop.

For users, this integration means fewer barriers between laptops and phones. For example, apps previously only available on Android can run on Chromebooks with improved performance.

Users can also experience the same AI features on all devices, whether they are using a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop. For developers, an integrated platform opens up the opportunity to create an application once and then run it across devices without the need for numerous modifications.

The future of AI laptops

The integration of Chrome OS and Android is part of Google's internal Project Aluminum. These Android-based laptops will be powered by the latest Snapdragon chips and focus on leveraging AI.

With the same base, Gemini can be presented not only on mobile phones but also on large screens, offering new experiences in work, study, and entertainment.

Google hopes this move can match the new trend from competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity, which have launched their own AI browsers and agents.

Recently, Google has been actively developing Gemini as an AI assistant and chatbot on its platform. AI and Gemini have been integral parts of several recent major Android updates and are well-integrated into the Android ecosystem.
