What Makes an AI System Trustworthy?
How exactly an AI model makes a decision is often unclear—a fact that complicates its use in fields such as medicine.
AI models can solve increasingly complex tasks. However, many AI applications face the problem that decisions cannot be replicated. This is referred to as a kind of black box. When artificial intelligence processes information, the path to the solution almost always remains a mystery
The German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) has therefore established an innovation center in collaboration with the German Academy of Science and Engineering: the German AI Innovation and Quality Centre in Kaiserslautern. Here, they aim to make AI more transparent and develop reliable quality standards.
Medical AI applications already support diagnostics.
AI is also being used in medicine. At the University Hospital in Mainz, artificial intelligence is being used to help improve the detection of cancer. Using thyroid tissue samples, AI can determine whether a tumour is present or not. This is particularly advantageous when distinguishing healthy tissue from pathologically altered tissue is challenging.
AI can provide valuable support in this way, but it's essential in the medical field that AI decisions can be understood and verified. At the same time, the digital results can also be compared with those of other clinics, making them easier to verify and validate. However, there is still no way to track the decision-making process precisely.
Skin disease detection app
In another project, AI is helping to detect skin cancer and other skin diseases. The German Research Centre for Advanced Research (DFKI) has developed an app designed to detect skin diseases. It is essential to the developers that the app be easy to use. It also offers the option to indicate other symptoms, such as redness or swelling.
An AI analysis then makes a diagnosis based on this data and provides explanations for the decision. This is intended to make the results understandable and verifiable. This also allows medical professionals to identify potential misdiagnoses.
