Brompton electrifies T-Line: The lightest and most expensive folding bike from Britain.
Folding bike pioneer Brompton has electrified its T-Line. According to the manufacturer, it's the British company's lightest electric folding bike, but arguably also its most expensive.
Just over a year after launching the G-Line with 20-inch tires and an optional electric drive system in the rear hub, Brompton is electrifying its T-Line. Manufactured in the UK, the titanium and carbon folding bike weighs just over 11 kg without the battery, and 14.1 kg with the battery. The folding bike will be considerably lighter; however, the electric T-Line apparently costs around €7,000. Brompton has also updated its somewhat more affordable C- and P-Line versions.
Brompton's rear-wheel drive electric folding bike
The focus of the innovations is the e-Motiq system with a torque sensor, which Brompton already introduced in the G-Line. It is now being adapted for the classic 16-inch models, delivering a range of 90 km on the T-Line. According to the manufacturer, the drive system consists of a specially developed 250 W rear hub motor, which delivers a torque of up to 30 Nm on the G-Line and up to 24 Nm on the electric C-, P-, and T-Line models. In previous models, Brompton relied on a drive in the front wheel hub, which has its pitfalls, especially on folding bikes.
The T-Line's new 345 Wh battery is removable, as with previous models, and is attached to the handlebars above the front wheel while riding. According to Brompton, the new drive system includes features such as a "Start Assist" mode, which provides electric assistance on climbs or when starting from a traffic light. The new models also feature a Walk Assist mode, capable of speeds up to 6 km/h, which is designed to help with pushing.
New handlebar control
The drive system is complemented by the e-Motiq handlebar control. According to the manufacturer, this displays riding data in real time and is used to control the assistance settings and lighting. Combined with Brompton's Electric app, the system is said to offer "intelligent range forecasts" and over-the-air updates. The manufacturer further states that after the first 100 kilometers, the software "recognizes individual riding behavior and adapts more closely to the user's habits every 6 kilometers," allowing the control/operating unit on the handlebar to display realistic information about the battery and range.
Brompton ships every e-bike with a three-year warranty on the electrical system. The new electric T-Line will be available for pre-order from October 21st via Brompton's website and the Brompton Junction stores in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Vienna. General sales will also begin at Brompton's authorized dealers on October 28th.
Brompton is keeping quiet about pricing. On its website, the manufacturer only lists the price of the new C-Line , which, with 12 gears, will start at €3,850. Upon inquiry, the manufacturer revealed that the four-speed electric T-Line will cost just under €7,000 and the single-speed version €6,800. Brompton is asking for €4,500 for the revised electric P-Line with four gears.
