Microsoft Expands M365 Copilot with Agent Mode

An agent mode in Microsoft 365 Copilot will allow users to collaborate closely with the AI assistant on multi-step tasks in Excel and Word. Microsoft announced that this will open up expanded, more complex application possibilities and improve the quality of the created content.

The software giant also announced a new Office agent designed to help Microsoft 365 users create documents directly from the Copilot chat interface. Interestingly, the feature uses Anthropic's Claude AI model instead of OpenAI's ChatGPT.

“Vibe Coding for Office Tasks”

In a blog post, Microsoft describes the new agent-based features as a form of "vibe coding " for office tasks. Users can use them to specifically control Copilot in coordinating multi-step tasks. "This is the new working model for human-agent collaboration," explains Sumit Chauhan, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Office Product Group.

According to Chauhan, Agent Mode makes advanced modeling in Excel "accessible to almost anyone." Results can be evaluated, problems fixed, and processes repeated until the results are verified. "It's like handing the work over to an Excel expert—while you set the direction and give instructions," says the Microsoft executive.

Microsoft illustrates this with practical examples:

For example, an Excel user can instruct the Copilot agent to analyze sales data. The agent selects appropriate formulas, creates visualizations, and delivers a summary analysis, including validation steps.

  • A loan calculator can be designed to calculate monthly payments based on inputs such as loan amount, interest rate, and term, and then create a payment plan in the form of a formatted table.
  • A monthly financial analysis for a small business, including a breakdown of product lines, is also possible.

In Word, Agent Mode can compose content or suggest edits while soliciting user input throughout the process. "This makes writing feel more like a dialogue than a task," says Chauhan. This enables faster iterations, better ideas, and an overall more engaging writing experience.

Agent Mode is currently available in Excel and Word for Microsoft 365 customers with Copilot licenses through the Microsoft Frontier early access program, and will later be available in PowerPoint. There are also plans to make the feature available for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions.
