Samsung Galaxy XR 'Project Moohan' Headset Review

The second Galaxy Event stage will almost certainly be used to unveil Samsung's first XR (Extended Reality) headset, currently known as Project Moohan. This headset is being touted as a direct challenger to Apple's Vision Pro.

Design: Lightweight, Ergonomic, and Luxurious

Samsung has put a lot of emphasis on the comfort and design of the Galaxy XR. The headset weighs just 545 grams, making it lighter than the Apple Vision Pro, which weighs between 600 and 650 grams.

The inside of the headset is lined with a soft, textured material, making it comfortable to wear for extended periods. Padding around the lenses and on the nosepiece ensures pressure is distributed evenly on the wearer's nose. The back strap features an adjustment dial for a stable and comfortable fit .

On the front, the Galaxy XR features six cameras, two of which serve as world-facing cameras , along with LED indicators to show the headset's activity status. There are also air vents at the bottom, as well as a microphone and hand-gesture sensors.

On the right side, there's a touchpad that allows users to navigate the interface. A long tap allows users to re-center, while a double tap allows for quick switching between VR and Pass-Through Mode. On the left side, there's a power port for connecting an external battery.

On the top, there are two physical buttons—the volume rocker and the Top Button. The Top Button opens the One UI XR launcher, and a long press directly accesses Google Gemini, the headset's built-in AI assistant.

4K micro-OLED display with 4,032 PPI density

Samsung equipped the Galaxy XR with a 4K micro-OLED display, boasting a total of 29 million pixels across its two panels. This figure far surpasses the Apple Vision Pro's 23 million pixels.

The display promises vivid, sharp colors with exceptional visual clarity. Samsung claims the headset delivers an ultra-realistic visual experience thanks to its pixel density of 4,032 PPI—one of the highest in its class.

Powered by Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2

The headset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, the most advanced processor for XR devices today. This chip is claimed to offer a 15% increase in GPU performance and up to 20% increase in CPU performance compared to the previous generation.

The chip is also specially optimized in collaboration with Samsung and Google, enabling it to efficiently handle 4.3K resolution per eye, real-time AI processing, spatial audio, and gesture tracking.

Advanced Tracking: Eyes, Hands, and Voice

The Galaxy XR features a highly advanced multi-sensor tracking system. The headset can recognize hand gestures, eye position, and even voice commands.

Hand tracking : Supported by a number of sensors on the four front corners of the headset, as well as two additional sensors on the bottom near the nose.

Eye tracking : Driven by four infrared cameras and AI technology that can recognize pupil position and gaze direction with high precision.

Depth sensor : Located at the top center, it helps the headset understand its surroundings spatially, including walls, floors, and objects in the room.

Voice tracking : An omnidirectional microphone that is able to distinguish the user's voice from the surrounding environmental sounds.

Audio: Spatial 3D with 2-Way Speakers

For an immersive audio experience, Samsung equipped the Galaxy XR with a two-way speaker system (woofer + tweeter) on both sides of the device. Spatial audio technology allows users to hear sound from realistic directions based on their position in the virtual world.
