Alternative to Safari: New Mac browser following in Apple's footsteps

A new browser aims to show Apple users how light-footed the web can be.

Alternative to Safari: New Mac browser following in Apple's footsteps

Kagi Orion is now available in version 1.0 for macOS – a fast, extremely minimalist browser that visually comes close to Apple's Safari .

The installation is simple, the interface appears uncluttered, including a focus mode without a visible UI.

Tabs, sidebar and per-site settings are strongly reminiscent of Safari, but feel even more streamlined.

Privacy without compromise

The US company Kagi promises “Privacy by Design”: no telemetry, no Kagi account needed, sync runs entirely via iCloud.

Passwords, bookmarks, and settings remain within the Apple ecosystem.

Ad and tracking blockers are integrated, along with support for Chrome and Firefox extensions.

Surprisingly fast in the test

In the Speedometer benchmark, Orion scores 34.5 points, just ahead of Safari (33.5) and well ahead of Chrome and Firefox.

The WebKit foundation and the lean code ensure a very smooth feel – at least when new.

For whom is the switch worthwhile?

Orion feels like a Safari variant, offering even more peace, privacy, and ease of use. The optional Orion+ service ($5 per month) provides extras but is not a mandatory subscription.

Whether the browser will remain fast in the long term and truly convince Chrome or Safari fans remains to be seen.

For Apple users looking for a clean, familiar, but more privacy-friendly alternative, Orion is already worth a try – which, incidentally, has been available for iOS and iPadOS for some time now.
