Google Pixel brings AI summaries for notifications: Here's how it works and who benefits.
Google is expanding the functionality of its Pixel devices with a new AI-powered feature that significantly simplifies message management. With the latest Feature Drop, the company is introducing a summarization function powered by Gemini Nano to shorten long messages automatically.
The processing takes place directly on the device, so no content is transmitted to external servers. Users of compatible models can activate the feature immediately and thus better organize their information overload.
Activation is done via the settings menu in the "Notifications" section. After the update, a new entry titled "Notification summaries" will appear there. This option is initially disabled but can be enabled with a tap. Users can then specify which applications should be included—for example, messaging apps like Google Messages, Gmail, or WhatsApp. Unwanted services can be specifically excluded.
The AI only intervenes when the display is off and the device is not in use. Short messages, multilingual messages, or content consisting solely of emojis remain unaffected. A star symbol and italics indicate compressed text. Tapping on the summary takes you directly to the whole conversation.
The feature is currently available on select devices. Supported models include the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It requires the latest version of Android System Intelligence (B.17), which can be downloaded from the Play Store. Initially, the feature is only available in English, but additional language versions are planned.
With this new feature, Google simplifies the daily lives of many users who are inundated with notifications. The automatic summaries save time, reduce distractions, and simultaneously protect privacy, as all data is processed locally. Those who regularly receive many messages will particularly benefit from this new function.
