Apple's Hardware Chief Says iPhone 18 Pro Screen Protectors Are Unnecessary
Apple uses more robust Ceramic Shield glass in the iPhone 18 Pro. Hardware chief Tom Marieb therefore considers screen protectors unnecessary.
Many users want to keep the display of the new iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max scratch-free for as long as possible. Therefore, many immediately opt for a screen protector. However, Apple apparently considers these unnecessary: Hardware chief Tom Marieb told that he is convinced the new Ceramic Shield 2 provides sufficient protection for the iPhones.
Ceramic Shield 2 is supposed to be better than any other film.
Marieb says that he "rebels" when someone puts a screen protector on their iPhone. After all, Apple works very hard to build beautiful front displays. The reason is Ceramic Shield 2. The new glass is supposed to be three times more scratch-resistant than the previous generation. Apple uses it on the iPhone 18 Pro and also on the outer display of the foldable iPhone Duo.
Scratch resistance is good – but repair costs remain the problem.
Marieb explains that Apple did not focus only on scratch resistance. The glass also had to remain durable for years, because these two properties often conflict in many materials.
Screen protectors are unlikely to disappear entirely. Many users want to avoid not only scratches but also expensive display repairs. Others opt for privacy filters or reduced reflections – things that even robust glass cannot replace.
The iPhone Duo is primarily about the hinge.
The iPhone Duo is also interesting to look at. According to Marieb, Apple put a lot of work into the hinge so that it feels stable when open, closed, and half-folded – not loose or wobbly. The inner display also features a matte nano-texture. This is designed to reduce reflections and make changes around the crease less noticeable.
Continuous screen protectors for the inner display are hard to apply because of the curvature. Split screen protectors, on the other hand, are visible. Perhaps many iPhone Duo users will choose not to use a screen protector on the inner display.
