iPhone 20 instead of iPhone 19: Here's why Apple might skip a phone version

For the iPhone's tenth anniversary in 2017, Apple skipped a number with the iPhone X. What does the company have planned for the phone series' twentieth anniversary?

The iPhone will turn 20 in two years. To mark the anniversary of the smartphone series, the company could skip a version number and release an iPhone 20 instead of an iPhone 19. This was stated by a senior employee of the market research firm Omdia at a tech conference in Seoul, as reported by the Korean newspaper "ETNews".

"Apple will release the iPhone 18e and the iPhone 20 in the first half of 2027 and the iPhone 20 Air, Pro, Pro Max and the iPhone Fold 2 in the second half of the year," the Omdia consultant is quoted as saying. The source of this information is unknown.

The market researcher's statements are not entirely far-fetched. For the iPhone series' 10th anniversary, Apple skipped a version number and released an iPhone X (X stands for the Roman numeral 10, editor's note) instead of an iPhone 9.

Since the iPhone 17 was released this year and the iPhone 18 will presumably follow next year, Apple would have to skip another number launch and launch the iPhone 20 in 2027.

Anniversary iPhone with new display technology?

A few weeks ago, the Korean trade magazine published initial details about the anniversary iPhone. According to the report, Apple could use a new display technology for the first time in this phone.

The so-called CoE (Color Filter on Encapsulation) displays are said to be thinner and brighter than previous displays. This is possible because the layers are arranged more compactly. According to ETN News, competitor Samsung will be responsible for producing the displays.

On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs unveiled the first Apple iPhone, paving the way for smartphones. The original iPhone went on sale in the US in the summer of 2007.
